Agricultural productivity
Agrobiodiversity across fields, farms, and landscapes shapes total yields, yield stability, and product quality. At the genetic scale, plant and animal traits influence growth rates, productivity, nutrient uptake, tolerance to climate stress, and susceptibility to pests and diseases, together determining biomass and nutrient content. At the varietal and breed scale, certain crop varieties and livestock breeds match local conditions, perform well under variable weather, and sustain output when shocks occur. Diversified rotations and mixed systems also reduce risk.
